Ahh, it’s been a great weekend.  We were able to eat raw all day yesterday, thanks to green smoothies, until about 8pm.  We did close to the same today.  I’ve had so much more mental clarity than I usually do, and it has really opened my eyes even more towards raw foods.

.

Since Patrick and I had somewhat of a raw food revelation, we decided that our eating habits needed an overhaul.  We decided that we are going to drink a green smoothie everyday for brunch (after our morning breakfast of fruit).  Also, we are soon going to purchase some raw almonds online.  When we get those in, we hope to have the following daily routine, excluding Tuesdays and Thursday because Patrick cannot get a break to have a smoothie at work.  (That’s if Axel does okay with the raw almonds, as we just discovered that cooked nuts don’t work for him.)

.

  • 6am : Wake up – eat 2 pieces of fruit within a half hour
  • 9am : Drink green smoothie
  • 11am : Eat a few soaked seeds, or some avocado
  • 1-2 pm : Eat a handful of soaked almonds
  • 4 pm : Snack on carrots or celery
  • 6 pm : Eat potato soup, or beans, rice, and vegetables

.

This is actually what my routine will be, but Patrick will most likely have to eat some oatmeal, cereal, or potatoes during the day for added calories.  If we are able to find inexpensive fruit to eat this summer, he may be able to stay raw all day then, too.

.

Speaking of the summer, we have been daydreaming about mangoes, strawberries, and watermelon a lot lately.  Oh my goodness, I can almost taste them.  Last summer was a bust when it came to fruit, so we’re hoping that things will be different this year.

Here is what each of us ate yesterday AND today.  It looks like a lot but the flavor is so good that you just cannot stop eating them.  We each had two large smoothies per day.  No wonder my brain was clear- I went through 4 heads of lettuce all by myself!

This made 2 large (and delicious!) green smoothies

Looking at the picture makes me want more!  Seriously, I’m starting to crave green smoothies like mad, and the same is true for Patrick.  Our bodies are getting used to having all the nutrients available, and they seem to be quite pleased about it!

.

This past Thursday, Patrick was not able to get off of work to come home for a smoothie, so we did without.  Apparently, that wasn’t a good idea because Patrick said that his mind could not process anything correctly.  His body desperately wanted and needed a green smoothie, and it showed.  I’m curious to see how our “off” days go this upcoming week.  (No smoothies on Tuesdays and Thursdays)

.
Like I’ve said before, please try these green smoothies!  They really give you an energy buzz, especially if you drink two in one day.  :)
.
*By the way, this new green smoothie habit of ours is quite expensive, especially since we use organic produce.  (It costs $6-7 for two large smoothies, to be exact.)  If you multiply that cost by 20 (5 days per week), you end up with a $130 cost at the end of the month.  In other words, we really have to strap down with the other foods that we purchase if we are going to make this work.  The effort is definitely worth it, though, because we feel better, and we can actually SHARE them with Axel.  He loves them.
.

Please excuse the way I speak in the video below. I’m pretty sure I say “like,” like 20 times.

.

I watched a video on YouTube earlier about whether or not it was safe to go raw while breastfeeding.  Like many people, my main concern is that the toxins my body gets rid of will be released into my breast milk, which obviously could be harmful to my son.

.

Most people I’ve talked to advise to wait until you have stopped breastfeeding before going 100% raw.  The guy on the video earlier, however, seemed to have a different perspective.

.

I’m not sure if he was specifically referring to going raw, but he did bring some good information to the table.  He talked about a few different studies that basically prove that changing to a cleaner diet doesn’t significantly elevate the toxicity levels in breast milk.  What’s more interesting is that Chlorella supposedly aids in leaching the toxins from the body.  (In other words, supplementing with chlorella while going raw may help get rid of all the junk in your system.)

.

I realize that going raw isn’t the same as just “improving” one’s diet.  It is a much more serious process.  I’ve experienced severe detox symptoms first hand, and it’s not fun.  It’s just common sense that if I try to go raw while breastfeeding, some toxins will be passed along to Axel.  The question I have is whether or not it would be worth it anyway.
.

.

I don’t want to go raw permanently, but it would be nice to do it for a couple of days.  I’d love to give my body a break by only drinking green smoothies and juice for a few days.  (I’d probably incorporate some sprouts, as well.)  I probably won’t be able to go completely raw until I’m done breastfeeding anyway, simply because we aren’t in a stable enough position financially to do so.

.

What do you all think?  Have any of you successfully gone raw while breastfeeding?  Have you heard of anyone attempting to do it, only to find that it just wasn’t possible?  I could really use some help.  I don’t want Axel to suffer through detox, obviously, but at the same time, isn’t he suffering right now by not having optimum nutrition?  This really is a controversial issue, especially among raw food circles.  It’s hard to make an educated decision when there is so little information out there on the subject.

.

So, if you or someone you know has gone raw while breastfeeding, please, PLEASE share your experience.  It would be so helpful to me, and I would be forever grateful.  I just don’t feel “well” right now, and I really think a couple days off of cooked food would benefit me immensely.  Thank you all.

.

Ahh, the love flame that once burned bright between green smoothies and I has been rekindled.  Patrick has also joined the delicious love triangle (well, I guess it only became a love triangle after he joined… ?).  I have already noticed a huge difference in the way I feel.  Green smoothies are amazing.

.

I drank my first (in a long time, at least) about a week ago.  I made it simple by using only romaine lettuce, bananas, and water.  It tasted pretty good, but I think that was mainly because I hadn’t had a green smoothie in so long.  The best part was that it gave me a ridiculous energy boost within about an hour of drinking it.  I seriously started having flash backs of when I was raw a few years back.  Those were the days…

.

A few days after drinking my first “so-so” green smoothie, I decided to make one again.  I actually made two, because Patrick wanted to drink some as well.  I used romaine lettuce, chilled bananas, kiwis, and fresh grapefruit juice.  It tasted superb.  The more I drink, the more I crave becoming a 100% raw vegan.  It gives me hope that one day, we will obtain our goal.

.

So, what are the benefits of drinking green smoothies?  Well, if you aren’t a salad eating type of person, they are a great way to get greens into your body.  Just blend up some romaine, spinach, or even kale, add your favorite fruits, and presto, you have a delicious, nutrient dense green smoothie.  Surprisingly, the fruit really does cover up the green taste.  (This, of course, depends on how much of each ingredient you use.)

.

Some of you are probably thinking, “ew, that’s disgusting!”  Let me tell you, it’s NOT!  And, even if you are particularly fond of the first green smoothie you make, you can always change up your recipe the next time.  The possibilities are endless.  Plus, I can almost guarantee that if you drink a smoothie daily for a week, you will be hooked.  Your body will be begging for more.  Mine sure is.

.

How about a recipe?  I’ll add more later, but here’s the one I came up with the other day.  I strongly encourage you to try this.  You won’t be sorry.  Green Smoothies are like coffee on steroids.

.

Green Smoothie #1

  • 2 heads romaine lettuce
  • 2 chilled bananas (peel and break into pieces, then place in freezer for 1 hour prior to use)
  • 2 kiwis
  • 2 grapefruit (you can chill these before hand as well, then squeeze juice into smoothie mix)

.

Mix the fruit together first, then add the lettuce a few leaves at a time.  Pour into two large glasses for you and a friend.

.

Enjoy!

.

As you all know, I recently let Axel have at some organic pears, which was semi-successful.  (He did well, but I ended up going back to exclusively breastfeeding because I felt he really wasn’t quite ready for the solid food.)  But, we’re now back in the food game, and the food is organic avocado.

.

He loves them!  He has been devouring them for the past few days, and he’s getting much more efficient at eating them.  Initially, he was just making a big mess all over himself, which is expected, but now he’s actually directing the food into his mouth (and making a big mess all over himself :) ). – (Raw food baby footage here!)

.

Somebody's Crazy Child

Within a few minutes after eating, he starts jumping all over the place.  Seriously, he gets ridiculously hyper!  I just know that his body is sucking up all the amazing nutrient goodness.  We’re going to have a hard time keeping up with him once he starts walking, or running, rather.

.

I’m so glad he is eating raw.  Granted, I realize that what he eats is our choice, but I’m just thankful that we know how good raw food is for the body now.  I couldn’t say that three years ago.  If he had been born then, I would probably be feeding him the typical rice cereal, or jarred peas.  Yuck.

.

I have to tell you, last night was insane.  Axel ate half of an entire avocado!  They weren’t the really big ones, but still!  He’s only eaten them 3-4 times, and usually only about a tablespoon, so we were completely blown away!  I guess he figured out that he likes them.

.

This picture cracks me up.

The reason we chose avocado is because number 1, they are available, and number 2, they are so creamy (which is perfect since he only has a few teeth), delicious, and plain good for you!  There’s nothing like a perfectly ripe avocado when you are really hungry.  Mmm, sooo good!

.

Did you know that avocados have been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer?  Also, avocados are high in oleic acid, which in many studies has been linked to helping prevent breast cancer (check out http://tinyurl.com/ykku6kx for more info).  Oh, and one more thing, research has found that certain nutrients, such as carotenoids, are absorbed better when combined with other foods.  In other words, go buy some avocados, people!

.

Actually, rutin in general seems to help circulation.  The pills have helped me a lot, but to be honest, supplements make me a little uneasy.  It seems like a much better idea to just stick to getting the nutrients my body needs directly from the source.

.

How about a little background?

.

When I was 18, I started getting a few spider veins here and there, on the sides of my thighs.  Let me tell you, I was very upset about this.  My mom didn’t start getting any until she hit 40, so finding them on myself while still a teenager was extremely unsettling.  At the time, though, I thought those sorts of things were out of my control.  I was never taught that diet played a part in how my body worked, much less one of the most important parts!

.

A few years later, about three months into my pregnancy, I started experiencing a lot of pressure in my legs, particularly after taking hot showers.  It felt like my veins were going to explode.  I would literally have to jump out of the shower, and immediately elevate my legs.  I knew that varicose veins were in my near future if I didn’t do something, and fast.

.

Upon consulting with my midwife, she suggested I start supplementing with rutin.  I had never heard of it, but I figured anything was worth a try, and the fact that it was a vitamin, and not a drug, helped persuade me (addressing the problem, not masking the symptoms).  Little did I know at the time that citrus fruits are packed with the stuff.

.

Three or four days after beginning supplementation, I started noticing an improvement.  My legs were hurting less, and hot showers were becoming more bearable.  However, as my belly/baby grew larger, the pain would return, leaving me no choice but to up my dosage.

.

After my son was born, the pain did decrease, somewhat.  I wasn’t carrying nearly as much weight, which helped with the leg pressure.  But, I soon found that when I stopped taking the rutin, things would quickly become uncomfortable for me again.

.

I spent the next six months taking the supplement on and off.  I would go a week without it, and then take it for 2-3 days straight, when absolutely necessary.  It was a tiresome routine, but well worth it, since it prevented a lot of discomfort.  I knew there had to be a better way.

.

Fast forward to six weeks ago, and you would find me studying up a lot on rutin.  I needed to know what the natural supplying source was, so I could stop taking it in the pill form.  I found the answer to be most commonly citrus fruits.  And, wouldn’t you know, grapefruit are in season?  Thus, my trial began.

.

I stopped supplementing completely two weeks ago, and started eating a grapefruit for breakfast every morning, sometimes two.  The change has been dramatic!  My legs don’t hurt much at all anymore, and I just plain feel better.  It’s as if my body has been crying out for true, natural rutin this entire time!  I am so shocked, but so not at the same time.  I’m telling you, if I had one of those little light bulb icons go on above my head every time I finally got something, I’d go through a TON of light bulbs.  Haha.  Sometimes it just takes me awhile.

.

Rutin, as it turns out, is classified as a bioflavonoid, and helps the body in a lot more ways than one.  (A bioflavonoid is any of a group of water-soluble yellow compounds, present in citrus fruits, rose hips, and other plants, that in mammals maintain the resistance of capillary walls to permeation and change of pressure – dictionary definition)

.

It is great for blood circulation, and varicose/spider veins, which has been proven in my case.  Rutin also helps the body properly utilize vitamin C, which is extremely important for all body functions.  On top of all this, rutin helps maintain skin collagen, and may have antioxidant properties, which protect the body from free radicals.

.

All of this to say, I’m in love with rutin.  Well, that’s somewhat of an overstatement, but I am really enjoying the benefits of it.  Who would have thought that everything the body needs to function properly is supplied in nature.  Every time I learn something new like this, I get all the more excited about understanding this beautiful creation called earth.
